Parent Resources

St. Mary’s Episcopal School has put together some parent resources to provide information on various childhood development topics like Pediatric Occupational Therapy, Speech, Hand Grip, and more. If you have any questions, please email us and we would be happy to assist.

The FUNctional OT

The FUNctional OT is a pediatric occupational therapy practice and proud partner of St. Mary’s Episcopal School, providing support for children of all abilities, parents, and teachers. We work to support development in a variety of skill areas, including fine motor, visual motor integration, visual perception, self-care, and sensory processing. These skills help provide the foundation for success in both the school and home environments. The FUNctional OT offers screenings annually and upon request for the above skill areas, as well as both full assessment and treatment services. Please contact Molly Snow MS, OTR/L at msnow@thefunctionalot.net for further information.

The Speech Path

We are a private therapy group dedicated to helping each individual thrive by educating the individual, their families and their communities on how to have a daily positive impact on one another. We are honored that we get to do exactly that with the wonderful St. Mary’s community again this year. Learn more here!

Hand Grasp

Check out this handout describing pencil grasp development in preschoolers and grasping development in babies and toddlers.

Scissor Skills

Cutting accurately with scissors is a skill we sometimes take for granted. Cutting requires the coordination of many skills including fine motor coordination, bilateral coordination, and eye-hand coordination. Like many other skills, scissor skills develop sequentially and require appropriate instruction and practice to develop fully. Check out this Developing Coordination for Scissor Skills handout.

Gross Motor Skills Milestone Chart

Gross motor skills are the abilities usually acquired during childhood as part of a child’s motor learning. Take a look at this Gross Motor Milestone Chart to see guidelines for skills your child should be able to do between the ages of 2 – 8 years old.

Fine Motor Skills Milestone Chart

Fine motor skill is the coordination of small muscles in movement with the eyes, hands and fingers. The complex levels of manual dexterity that humans exhibit can be related to the nervous system. Fine motor skills aid in the growth of intelligence and develop continuously throughout the stages of human development. Take a look at this Fine Motor Milestone Chart for guidance.
