Growing a Garden in JK
November 16, 2016
The children in Mrs. Dixon’s Junior Kindergarten class have been enjoying the beautiful Fall weather by working with other classes to create a garden in the front of the school.
Dixon said gardening offers many learning opportunities, including learning the parts of a plant and what a plant needs to grow. It also helps children experience sensory elements in nature, such as colors and textures, scents and taste.
Gardening provides full exposure for children to experience and learn first-hand about insects and worms, and nature provides leaves, glass and stones, rocks and soil for digging, building and creating.
“Nature’s garden offers another play environment where children use their prior experience, knowledge and imaginations to create new worlds and develop and strengthen their social-emotional skills,” Dixon said. “These are the future caretakers of our world.”
