Gaining Confidence in the Twos
September 23, 2017
This year at St. Mary’s, we have two classes for two-year-olds, broken into younger and older twos who come to school either Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays. Both classes have been very busy exploring everything in their classroom and outside, gaining confidence to try new things and make new friends.
“During our first 30 minutes at school, we enjoy music, rhymes and stories while moving freely in the room,” said Mrs. Britt, two-year-olds teacher. “The story board allows the children to interact with the stories and begin to retell them. Playdough offers wonderful fine motor work as the children roll, pound and squeeze.”
Some of our favorites these first two weeks:
- Testing out the playground – including the slide – and even the big slide. The balance beam is a new challenge for many of the children. They are attempting to reach the monkey bars, get to the top of the playset and conquer the climbing wall.
- At snack time, we do some counting and number recognition. How many friends are here today?
- The children enjoy music inside and outside in the music garden.
- Playing in the sandbox – scooping and pouring is a favorite activity for twos – and a great way to build strength.
Mrs. Britt also notes that “Monday’s thrill was the capture of a toad.”
